Inizi precoci e fama sempiterna con i Supertramp

Rick Davies nacque a Swindon (Gran Bretagna) nel 1944 ed iniziò giovanissimo a suonare il pianoforte, sviluppando un forte legame con il rhythm & blues. Nel 1969 fondò i Supertramp, gruppo che troverà una formazione stabile a metà anni ’70 e che con album come “Crime of the Century” (1974) e “Breakfast in America” (1979) raggiunsero fama mondiale, intrecciando melodie pop e raffinatezza progressiva. Dopo l’uscita del co-leader Roger Hodgson nel 1983, Davies portò avanti i Supertramp mantenendo lo spirito originario, pur con fortune alterne. Negli anni Duemila iniziò a combattere con i suoi problemi di salute ma restò comunque punto di riferimento: la sua visione musicale e il suo timbro vocale ruvido resteranno sempre marchi inconfondibili.

L’importanza musicale dei Supertramp

I Supertramp seppero coniugare l’intimismo del cantautorato con l’ampiezza del rock progressivo e l’accessibilità del pop radiofonico. L’uso caratteristico del pianoforte elettrico Wurlitzer, unito agli arrangiamenti orchestrali ed a testi dal tono ironico o introspettivo, diede vita a un linguaggio musicale unico, facilmente riconoscibile. Brani come “The Logical Song”, “Dreamer” e “Goodbye Stranger” riuscirono a parlare a milioni di ascoltatori senza rinunciare alla complessità armonica. In un’epoca segnata dalla discomusic e dall’hard rock, i Supertramp furono capaci di costruire un ponte: la loro musica rimane un esempio raro di equilibrio tra sofisticazione artistica e successo commerciale globale.

Il significato di “Goodbye Stranger”

Pubblicata nel 1979 nell’album “Breakfast in America”, “Goodbye Stranger”  riflette sul tema della libertà individuale e del rifiuto dei legami troppo stretti. Rick Davies canta con tono disincantato il destino del viaggiatore che non si ferma: “It was an early morning yesterday / I was up before the dawn”: un inizio che introduce il tema del costante andare. Il ritornello ribadisce la scelta di restare fedele solo a sè stessi: “Goodbye stranger, it’s been nice / Hope you find your paradise”. La canzone diventa così un inno alla vita nomade, al non lasciarsi imprigionare da relazioni o luoghi, mantenendo sempre viva la propria identità. E lasciando un buon ricordo a chi abbia fatto insieme un pezzo di strada.
